Back to the Bottle - Boulder Spirits Cask Strength Bourbon and Trailhead Single Malt

We have enjoyed every whiskey we've tried from Boulder Spirits. These two follow suit and are exceptionally tasty whiskeys.

The Cask Strength Bourbon at 5 years old is a revelatory experience. At nearly 134 proof, it's on the hot side but nothing like I expected. And the flavors are fat and bold and so delicious. At 44% malted barley, there is a fruitiness - pineapple, pears - that stands out among bourbons. The finish lasts forever and it is a flavorful finish rather than a heat finish that so many barrel-proof whiskeys can have. I'm about to share the rest of this bottle with friends so I'll need to get a replacement asap as there isn't so much of this to go around.

The Trailhead is one of those whiskeys with so many details that on the surface, one might wonder how it could be enjoyable. This one is outstanding! It's comprised of two different distillations - one peated American single malt and one unpeated - that spent four years in new, charred oak. Then, each is finished for nearly a year in its own PX Sherry barrel (or butt?) with the intention of having two separate expressions but they tasted better together so that's what we get in the bottle.

We are lovers of peat in general but the way Boulder Spirits used the peat, as a true integral ingredient in the whole experience vs the main show, is delightful. The peat is so light on the nose it could be missed but as the malt sits on the tongue, the peat emerges among the lemon and vanilla. Just wonderful!

The Cask Strength Bourbon is $75 and The Trailhead is $95 and both are quite limited and well worth the price.

Even if you can't get these in your area, you should find some Boulder Spirits whiskey and give it try. We doubt you'll be disappointed.

Cheers!
